Just Shoot Me

By now you've read and heard the rather bizarre story about the two shooting deaths at the Montage. All the facts aren't being reported yet, and the identities and details of the two dead, a couple apparently involved in an altercation, have not been released.

But after last week in Blacksburg, Va., and this weird event...
Can we talk about guns?
Do we really want everyone to have the right to bear arms? Other "first-world" nations think we're totally nuts to allow citizens to have handguns and semiautomatic weapons. Are they right?
What do you think?

Guns, guns, guns. Good topic. I'm a first time writer, long time listener, so thanks for having me on your show. I'm a foreigner, one whose country was the original raison d'etre behind bearing arms in the first place. Yes, England, for those of you unsure.

I shot a few rifles in England as a young teenager - part of an army cadet kinda thing at school. Shoot things at a wall, stop, march, shoot again. All great stuff but it took another twenty something years for me to appreciate why guns should be allowed. I, today, enjoy putting a whole bunch of tin cans on a wall in the middle of nowhere and shoot a 22 calibre rifle at them. Then, when done, go get the cans and recycle them (yes, honestly we do).

So, the older 'large' people shot recently at a $2200 a night fancy OC residence, in my opinion, do not dissuade me from believeing that ON THE WHOLE guns are ok. We cannot unscramble scrambled eggs nor cry over spilled milk. We can however accept that in every society and culture there are always those that wish to cause trouble, be part of trouble or believe the Feds are only moments away from controlling the masses.

While I cannot stand the concept of 'out of my cold dead hand heston style fearmongering/gun justification', I do think that there is a place for controlled shooting.

Handguns and semi's that can knock a house down with enough rounds don't seem a good thing to have on the street, nor indeed in the wilderness. They should be the sole respite of the trained killer/soldier.

The fact remains however that USA has more killings per registered gun than any other developed country - not a statistic to be proud of - but one which fuels the fools into believing we must have them to protect ourselves.

After I was personally attacked with a non-firearm deadly weapon on a residential street in LB, I asked the police whether I should get a gun and what my 'options' were. Even in the heat of rage, panic, fear, revenge, I opted against that choice...for the simple reason that I couldn't shoot anything more than a soda can.
