What are girls supposed to do?

Got a young daughter? Watch this with her. Then talk to her.

As the mother of 3 boys, I found this video fascinating and disturbing...I'm not sure what I would say to them if one were a daughter instead of a son...parents of girls do have incredible challenges.

And, its not just the girls...From my experiences, I can tell you that the media representations impact a boys expectations of "real beauty" when it comes to the teenage dating scene. Separating media representations from reality is possible, but all too often, real women buy into these fantasies and confuse the subject. As a community, we have to work together at creating interest and space in our world for the endless ways in which people are beautiful.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Kris. I think the film is appropriate for boys as well. Girls and women maim themselves in their quest for physical perfection, and if boys know about it, they can help counter this wrong-headed thinking. I hope you share the film with your boys and that it sparks a lively dinnertime conversation.

The clip is gone from YouTube 'due to violation of terms of service.'

What was it?
